At minimum: commercial property, general liability, sexual misconduct liability, D&O for the board, and workers' compensation for paid staff. Churches with vans/buses need commercial auto. Those with counseling programs need professional liability. A crime/fidelity bond protects church funds.
Standard general liability usually excludes or severely sub-limits sexual misconduct. You need a dedicated sexual misconduct liability endorsement or standalone policy. This is non-negotiable for any church with youth programs, childcare, or counseling ministries.
General liability covers volunteer activities on church premises. However, volunteers are typically not covered under workers' compensation. Churches with active volunteer programs should ensure their GL policy explicitly includes volunteer activities and consider abuse/molestation screening protocols.
Historic churches need agreed-value or replacement cost coverage that reflects the actual cost of rebuilding with similar materials -- custom woodwork, stained glass, slate roofing. Standard policies that pay actual cash value will leave enormous gaps on irreplaceable architectural features.
